Arizona scenery with flowers11/27/2023 Suzanne Wright first stepped into the Sonoran Desert some 30 years ago and was immediately smitten. Visit to learn more.ĭiscover more places to spot beautiful blooms at our Where to See Wildflowers in Phoenix blog post. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department offers guided wildflower walks and hikes at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and many of its other regional parks. Because my love affair with desert flowers is enduring. And all the parks around the state feed into the Desert Botanical Garden website, so you can see what’s at peak where.” “ The Falcon Guide to Sonoran Desert Wildflowers and Anne Epple’s Field Guide to the Plants of Arizona work really nice as companions, and they are arranged by flower color. Because every season and every trail offers something new. And try crouching down, shooting from ground level or from the side with the open sky so the flowers really show up.”Īs we wrap up our time on the trail, I ask for two more recommendations: a good guidebook and website to help me identify what I’m seeing. “Shoot with the sun behind you so the flowers are fully illuminated. “Avoid midday the light is too harsh and washed out,” he suggests. I ask him if he has any tips for amateurs looking to capture a great image with a smartphone. Smith posts wonderful photos to the Spur Cross Facebook page. “And May is fantastic because the ironwood and palo verde bloom,” he adds. “But datura is one of my favorites, along with strawberry hedgehogs and saguaro blooms.” “They’re all my favorites in their own special way,” he says. He considers the question and takes a beat to answer it. Many are easy to spot against the desert backdrop, but I like to peek under buckhorn cholla and brittlebush for the flash of tantalizing pink blossoms that encircle the tiny pincushion cactus. I love the neon, almost lurid, pinks, reds, yellows and oranges of cactus flowers. In mid March, Smith sends people toward Elephant Mountain to see purple lupines and scorpion weed. At Spur Cross, mule deer, fish, frog and lizard sightings are frequent. “Butterflies love buckwheat, sweet bush and desert lavender, which grow in the washes,” Smith says.ĭuring these hikes, Smith likes to point out how both animals and native people used plants for food and medicine. ![]() I ask which flowers attract the most pollinators, specifically butterflies. “It’s like Grand Central Station right now,” says Smith of the energetic hummers. (As it happens, chuparosa is Spanish for hummingbird.) I also spot cheery orange globe mallow.Īs we enter Boca Grande Wash, the petite, trumpet-shaped scarlet blooms of the chuparosa are riotous with hummingbirds. Smith points out desert marigolds (their yellow heads blowing in the breeze), white desert tobacco, wispy red fairy dusters and the elegant blooms of sacred datura, which will close in the heat of the day, then reopen in the evening hours. It’s early morning and we’re walking along the creek bottom on the Dragonfly Trail, a lush riparian area with sandy soil. Smith says another two or three soakings between late February and mid April would be fortuitous. Rabbits and ground squirrels love it.īecause the Phoenix area warmed up fast this year, things are progressing quickly. But Smith corrects me it’s actually comb bur, an annual with minuscule white flowers and fruit curved like the crescent moon. ![]() I’ve always thought brittlebush was the first of the flowering shrubs. As is typical in the Sonoran Desert, about half the species are annuals. Though it is the smallest of the Maricopa County parks, Spur Cross has documented some 400 wildflower species, making its diversity unrivaled. ![]() Still, I think it’ll be better than average.” ![]() “But our January cold snap might not be so good for certain species. “Because we had a lot of rain in the fall and winter, I was thinking it was going to be a banner year,” he says of the 2016 wildflower season. Variables such as temperature and rainfall are just two factors that affect the show. Trying to predict how profuse the wildflowers will be or which trail is in bloom when is folly, says Smith. He guides numerous wildflower hikes throughout the spring and summer. He’s worked at Cave Creek’s Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, part of the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation network, for 10 years. Ranger Kevin Smith’s tousled blonde hair and rugged good looks are straight out of central casting. Now nothing else compares.Īnd come spring, all you have to do is step onto a trail to encounter fantastical blooms of every color, shape and size. By Suzanne Wrightīefore I moved here, I liked the plastic-wrapped, cut flowers I bought at the grocery store: Gerber daisies, tulips, stargazer lilies.īut after seeing brilliant gold Mexican poppies blanketing a mountainous hillside and flaming ocotillo buds reaching for the sky, I crushed on desert wildflowers. 400 species of desert grow in this tiny county park, and ranger Kevin Smith knows (almost) all of them.

Keep on truckin tattoo11/27/2023 ![]() This stupid little cartoon caught on hugely. Was I now a "spokesman" for the hippies or what? I had no idea how to handle my new position in society!. I became acutely self-conscious about what I was doing. Crumb's notions Ĭrumb used the cartoon as an example of what caused the discomfort he claims he felt with his sudden fame during the late 1960s, saying: Ĭrumb has sued various entities to defend the copyright, including in 2005. Ĭrumb was offered $100,000 by Toyota to reproduce the image for a Keep On Truckin' advertising campaign, but refused it. Court of Appeals reversed that decision, and it returned to copyrighted status. Sales' request for summary judgment, and Keep On Truckin' became public domain. The work was protected by the terms of the 1909 Copyright Act, and any omission of notice was considered to cause the work to be public domain. Sales claimed the work was in the public domain, because Crumb had not included the copyright symbol on the work, although he had done so in Zap #1 as a whole. The cartoon's images were imitated and much displayed during the hippie era. A visual burlesque of the lyrics of the Blind Boy Fuller song "Truckin' My Blues Away", it consists of an assortment of men, drawn in Crumb's distinctive style, strutting across various landscapes. Zero keymo adapter11/27/2023 He mentioned they were unhappy with their cans and had ~2.5-3moa shifts on them. All mainstream manufacturers nowadays would get the same results using that test fixture.Ī swat cop from arizona approached me at NTOA and said he was part of a larger city team there with something like 45 or 50 surefire cans. They hang their hat on a test rig that is a bench rifle on a sled with a super fat barrel that eliminates all deflection and harmonics. That one company that I won't call out directly (OK, it's Surefire) is probably the worst for this. When manufacturers state that they have zero impact shift, that's just their marketing team lying to you. It's very much like a good muzzle crown.Īnyway, long answer is that your repeatability on a given rifle will be very good with the large taper alignment system of the KeyMount design, and each rifle will exhibit a different behavior that is unique that rifle. As it leaves the barrel and goes through the muzzle device, forces from the gasses that accelerate around from behind the bullet can cause an unequal push on it if the device isn't designed correctly. ![]() Precision in your group size is where having a muzzle device with symmetrical features can be important. The rifle just had a crazy harmonic with the load and barrel they designed their system around. Keeping the same KeyMount flash hider on the rifle, we could place another suppressor on that had a different mass and the group dropped to 1 MOA. We were seeing a full 8 MOA group size with one suppressor. When I was working with Tracking Point on getting suppressors to work with their system (back before they fell out of bed), we found that one of their rifles had massive harmonic issues with one of their loads. ![]() The exception (that's outside the manufacturers control) is that adding anything to a barrel can cause harmonic issues that are unique to that barrel. ![]() Precision should remain the same or improve. The good part is that when you put it back on that barrel it will do the same thing for that ammo. You'll have to note what happens on that rifle, as it may not be the same for another due to the reasons above. The important thing is that when putting a suppressor on a KeyMount muzzle device, it's very repeatable. Putting the suppressor on adds 0.5 MOA after that. Just putting a brake on my 6.5 CM Bergara B14 will cause a 2 MOA shift down. A long pencil barrel can have a big impact on that POI shift. The biggest impact on accuracy will be your barrel, its stiffness, and the effect of harmonics. Note: As I talk about accuracy, the true definition is the difference in point of impact from point of aim. ![]() The features on KeyMount muzzle devices are designed to maintain the accuracy of the host weapon by having a very large taper alignment surface and internal features that won't adversely push the bullet around. pistol suppressors) and the micro muzzle devices are meant to fit in either, while the longer existing ones may not fit in smaller pistol blast chambers like the Ghost handgun suppressor. The KeyMo and KeyMicro are adapters that are differentiated by the thread socket (rifle vs. Also, the taper on the can and mount provide significant accuracy advantages over other mounting systems and the one handed positive ratcheting system is easy to use and cool as hell.I think you may be overthinking it. Your silencer is now compatible with the Dead Air Key Brake and Flash Hider – giving you the best mounting system in the industry.Īdvantages over other systems are that you do not have to access the collar to lock/unlock the mount so it can be used on a 10" barrel under a 14" large diameter rail, for instance. Simply unscrew your existing mount, and thread the Key-Mo on. We’ve developed the Key-Mo™ to give your SilencerCo Omega and Saker a much-needed upgrade. If you’re one of the many owners of a SilencerCo® Saker, Hybrid, or Omega and have ever longed for a simpler and more reliable mount, your salvation is here.

Amf drink girly11/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Garnish with fresh mint, and for an even more festive, summer vibe, edible flowers.Giving the Long Island Tea a run for its money, this spinoff is potent enough to make you go tipsy. Top each glass with chilled lemon-lime soda (about 4-6 ounces each) and squeeze a lemon wedge over before serving. Just before guests arrive, cut 8 lemon wedges (about 1 large lemon).įill 8 tall glasses with ice and divide the liquor mix between the glasses. Chill the soda well in advance and make sure you have plenty of quality ice.Ĭombine the liquors and liqueur in a bottle or pitcher and place in the refrigerator until it’s time to assemble the drinks. You’ll also need 4-6 oz (about a half can) of lemon-lime soda for each cocktail, so for 8 drinks that would be approximately 16-24 oz, or about 4 cans of soda. So if you’re making a batch of 8 drinks, this would look like: 4 ounces vodka, 4 ounces gin, 4 ounces white rum, 4 ounces tequila, and 4 ounces blue curaçao. Some recipes also increase the quantity of Midori to one ounce, for maximum fruity flavor and neon green color.įor each drink, you’ll need a half ounce each of: vodka, gin, white rum, and tequila blanco, and blue curaçao. The Tokyo Iced Tea follows the same proportions as the AMF, but replaces the blue curaçao with the melon-flavored liqueur Midori. Combine one ounce of gin with one ounce of vodka, a half ounce of blue curaçao, and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. The Aqua Velva is made with only vodka and gin, instead of the combination of vodka, gin, tequila, and rum. There are several variations of the classic Long Island Iced Tea, but the Aqua Velva and Tokyo Iced Tea are most similar to the AMF. Variations: Aqua Velva and Tokyo Iced Tea Garnishing with a sprig of mint will also add freshness and soften the edges. To keep things refreshing and feeling fairly light, all that’s needed is a splash of fresh lemon or lime juice.Īfter mixing the liquor, liqueur, and soda, simply squeeze a wedge of lemon or lime over the drink for a bright, fresh flavor that will keep this drink from leaning too sweet or too strong. Sour mix would add sour and more sweet, potentially tipping the scales to too sweet. Sour mix is a sweet and sour cocktail mixer that can be recreated at home with citrus juices and simple syrup.īecause this cocktail is made with lemon-lime soda and the orange-flavored liqueur blue curaçao, there is already plenty of sweetness. Many AMF recipes call for sour mix, but it’s unnecessary, in my opinion. It’s a much more balanced drink with a reasonable two ounces of liquor, and you can always fix a second later, if you like! Citrus juices vs. ![]() You can opt to make the drink with one ounce of each of the four spirits if you choose, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Exactly how this bright blue cocktail came to be called this is a mystery, but it’s likely that it had something to do with its original specs, which (like a full strength LIIT) included a hefty four ounces of liquor. If you’re reading this, chances are you already know what AMF stands for (Adios Mother******). Whatever the origin of the boozy drinks we’ve come to know today, the Long Island Iced Tea was the inspiration for the AMF and many other spin-offs. There’s also the Prohibition-era story of the “Old Man Bishop,” a boozy concoction from the south that featured a mix of five types of liquor. The original tall and boozy cocktail, the Long Island Iced Tea was allegedly invented by one Robert Butt in the early 1970s, although similar recipes are purported to have been in print earlier. What we do know is that this Long Island Iced Tea riff is also sometimes known as a Blue Motorcycle. So who invented the AMF? That’s a good question, and one that seems to be largely unanswered. If you’re a fan of lemon-lime sodas like Sprite, 7-Up or even Italian lemon soda, this is a cocktail to try this summer. You may also enjoy my Blue Skies Sparkling Sake Cocktail! It’s quick to batch up for a group, and you can keep a bottle of pre-made mix in the fridge and then just top each glass with soda and a squeeze of citrus. It’s a simple drink that is sweet, sour, and most importantly – it’s a lot of fun.īlue drinks are some of the most fun summer cocktails, and this one is easy, pretty, and crowd-pleasing. Lemon-lime soda takes the place of cola, and blue curaçao adds a pop of summery color. This tall, citrusy sipper is a lighter, blue-r version of the infamous Long Island Iced Tea.

Sweet home 3dfor windows 811/26/2023 ![]() I looked at several Mac compatible programs, both in the app store and directly from company web sites. Can’t think of much else amateur home designers would want/need! Love this app! So, your renderings are our-to-life and accurate. So, for example, it won’t let you place a wall or piece of furniture that’s too large in too small an area. Also, what I love about this app is that it is totally accurate to measurements (and proved measurements). To me, this was huge, as I didn’t to have to learn some complex new app. We completely came up with a new floorplan and design in a weekend! The learning curve is small, so once you spend a little time working you’ll get the hang of all the tools. Once we knew the measurements were on target we could easily add and move walls, as well as furniture and fixtures to get a really nice looking AND accurate 3D rendering of what we could do. We had the blueprint and simple scanned that as the background, and then easily drew the exisitng walls over that. My wife and were looking for an app in order to be able to precisely create a new design for our condo (creating and moving walls etc…) and also being to decorate it to get a really good idea of what would work.
